Conclusion

We constantly consume things when we do not need them, we want them. Our desire to own something new or exclusive is greater than our desire to own what is practical and useful or even affordable to us as individuals. This consumerism is in our faces from an early age, wanting the latest doll, toy, games console or iPod simply because the media tells us we need them. People, especially girls and young women, need to realise that magazines, promotions and advertising are just there to make us think we need the latest trends to be happy and popular, particularly in the fashion industry. With a bit of creativeness and using accessories, we can bring old items back to life and make them seem new, trendy, unique and individual to us. We are able to continuously do this, meaning we can recreate ourselves and our image as many times as we like, without spending loads of money. I know from personal experience that new items will only make you happy for a short while and that constantly spending money will lead to debt and unhappiness.

What ‘we’ think of ourselves and the way we look is more important than what the magazines and fashion world think we should look like. A new bag will not feed us, put a roof over our head or bring us love and friendship. We should all embrace our individualism and stop following the 'latest trends’, get away from the big money consuming machine, the fashion industry, and be ourselves.
